This course explores the development of capitalism in the United States from the colonial period to the present. It will pay particular attention to how capitalism emerged and changed over time, and how these changes affected the nation's political and social history. Central topics in American history'the colonization of Indigenous lands; the enslavement of Africans; the immigration of poor Europeans, Chinese, and Mexicans; America's brief gambit at overseas empire; the New Deal; the rise of modern conservatism'will be re-interpreted through the lens of political economy, offering new ways to understanding the nation's past.
