Description:
The course examines ethical issues that arise in medicine, medical research, and health care decision-making. To do this, the course explores the theoretical foundations of ethics, including utilitarianism, deontology, virtue theory, social theory, and ethics of care. Students are asked to apply ethical reasoning to topics such as informed consent, research on animal and human subjects, end-of-life care, reproductive health, patient rights, access to care, health care policy, and global health. ***COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs)*** 1. Articulate through speaking and writing an understanding of traditional and contemporary issues in medical ethics. 2. Apply ethical perspectives and principles to decision-making in the medicine. 3. Create a semester long project, demonstrating the development of critical thinking, analytic, and writing skills. SP
