This advanced course explores family systems through a clinical and systemic lens, emphasizing both theory and applied practice. Students will examine complex family processes, including crises, stressors, and challenges that families encounter across the life cycle. Topics include developmental transitions, illness, death, secrets, violence, poverty, diversity, school crises, substance use, interventions from larger systems, divorce, remarriage, and other events that shape family functioning and adaptability. The course integrates advanced systemic theory with practical applications, focusing on how family therapists can assess, intervene, and support families in effective, respectful, and ethical ways. Students will engage with real-world case examples, evidence-based strategies, and resources for further exploration. Emphasis is placed on understanding how critical life events influence family dynamics and how skilled intervention can promote resilience, cohesion, and positive change.
