This course gives students the knowledge and skills needed to apply planned change processes with families and groups. It prepares students to use effective group leadership and family communication skills grounded in research-informed practice. The course framework covers basic issues in group work, stages of group development, and the application of group processes to specific types of groups. Students receive both a conceptual and practical overview of group counseling, including major theories, group types, multicultural considerations, professional and ethical responsibilities, group formation, stage-specific characteristics, managing challenging behaviors, tasks of the working stage, and group termination.
