    An overview of the history of graphic communication. Topics covered include: the invention of the written language, the origin of printing, graphic design in the Renaissance and Victorian eras, Art Nouveau, Pictorial Modernism, International Typographic Style, Post-Modernism, contemporary conceptual and new wave movements. Emphasis is on the Post-Art Nouveau eras.     This studio course, required of all BFA majors in Graphic Design, is an intermediate level exploration of typographic design as a practical form of visual problem solving. Structures, grids, methods and technical skills related to typography as applied to professional graphic design practice will be addressed. This course will build and expand upon foundational typography, both formally and conceptually. By doing so, students gain valuable experience in the skillful manipulation of type for more advanced applications. Prerequisites: 'B-' or better in DESGR 1600 AND 'C+' or better in DESGR 2200 AND DESGR 2600. Corequisites: DESGR 2300.

    This studio course, required of all BFA majors in Graphic Design, builds upon principles, concepts methods and processes developed in Typography 1 & 2. Students will engage in advanced typographic practice through investigation of multi-dimensional typographic systems for analog, digital and built environments. Students will learn how to typographically visualize complex data and apply effective strategies of communication for specific user audiences within specific contexts. Prerequisites: 'C+' or better in DESGR 2700 AND completion of Graphic Design Second-year Review.

    This studio course, required of all BFA majors in Graphic Design, introduces students to the research phase of an intensive BFA final project to be completed during DESGR 4700 Capstone 2. In DESGR 4600 Capstone 1, students will engage in research on a specific topic of interest and explore a variety of processes and methods of execution. They will also determine a production schedule for the project. Prerequisites: "C-" or better in (DESGR 3500 AND DESGR 3800).
