    This course was designed to provide information about individuals with disabilities specifically as it relates to physical education. A variety of disabilities are discussed. Consideration is given to the characteristics, limitations, and special needs of these individuals as well as teaching strategies and indicated and contraindicated activities in physical education.

    This course was designed to provide students the background knowledge and skills to implement the achievement-based curriculum model in their teaching. Students are provided opportunities to develop a curriculum, assess students in motor skills and fitness, plan lessons based on assessment, implement the lessons incorporating the principles of teaching, evaluate student outcomes by measuring their progress, and evaluate their own teaching based on student outcomes.

    Students will demonstrate the ability to identify the parts of the visual system, development of the eye, understand and interpret eye reports, as well as translate the information into an educational plan. Students will also gain an understanding of disease (hereditary and other) and pathologic processes of the human eye, how vision is affected and how treatment is provided. Prerequisite: SP ED 5410 Corequisite: SP ED 5432

    Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding in functional implications and educational considerations of many major eye diseases and disorders; the different eye care professionals and their role in vision care; the purposes/integral facets of a functional vision assessment and a learning media assessment; the factors and issues in deciding between the use of large print vs. regular print books and materials, as well as other media; the basic laws of optics and other components/resources specific to students with low vision.     This course will provide students with the knowledge, skills, strategies and resources for meeting the early literacy needs of young children, birth to five, who are blind or visually impaired in the home and school settings. Prerequisites: "C" or better in SP ED 5410.

    Students will learn to read, produce, and teach the English Braille American Edition (EBAE) code and the Unified English Braille (UEB) code to young children who are blind or visually impaired. Students will learn the uncontracted/alphabet braille contractions, rules of usage for contractions, use of the Perkins braillewriter, and slate and stylus while gaining a knowledge of contracted/grade 2 braille contractions. Emphasis is on accuracy of brailling/transcription, application of rules, beginning formatting, and teaching strategies. Prebraille strategies, braille assessment, IFSP development and instructional planning are included. Prerequisites: "C" or better in SP ED 5410.

    Students will learn to read, produce, and teach literary braille code. Included are the literary braille contractions, short-form words, punctuation, and rules of usage of contracted braille, using the Perkins Braillewriter and slate and stylus. Emphasis is on accuracy, application of rules, beginning formatting, and teaching strategies. Braille assessment, IEP development, and instructional planning are included. Prerequisites: "C" or better in SP ED 5410.

    This course will prepare students/future teachers of students with visual impairments to better support children who are blind or visually impaired in the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills. Students will learn the advanced braille codes (Unified English Braille (UEB) Math/Science and UEB with Nemeth) while acquiring an introduction in braille music, foreign language braille, and computer braille. Students will learn how to transcribe math and science materials (including pictures, diagrams and graphs) into braille using appropriate formatting and will be introduced to techniques for teaching children who are blind or visually impaired mathematics and science. Students will also learn how to use/teach the Abacus. Prerequisites: SP ED 5410 AND SP ED 5441
